How I learnt to choose for myself

How I learnt to choose for myself

I learned to choose for myself, and this realization marked a turning point in my journey as an empty nester. Much like the one I faced in 2008 as an artist. After nearly a decade of exhibiting my art in galleries and holding solo shows each year, I reached a point where I felt a sense of stagnation and directionlessness. It was akin to the feeling of many empty nesters who find themselves reevaluating their purpose and identity as their children move out.

Seeking clarity, I consulted Prof. Chinmay Mehta, a respected environmental architect and veteran artist. His insights helped me understand that true creativity, like personal fulfillment, comes from within and isn’t about meeting others’ expectations.

For years, I had crafted my art to appeal to what I thought others wanted to see and buy, leading to a cycle of limited sales and unsold pieces. This mirrors how empty nesters might struggle with finding new passions or redefining their roles. At a pivotal moment, I asked myself, “What next?” and decided to take a break to focus on self-discovery.

I began sketching solely for myself, without the pressure of producing art for sale. After a three-year hiatus, I discovered my signature style and launched a new series titled "Search" in 2011. This series represented a deep personal exploration, much like the journey of rediscovery that many empty nesters experience. The show was a success, and I sold most of the pieces because I had embraced my authentic self. This newfound authenticity resonated with my audience and mirrored the fulfillment that comes from fully embracing one's true self during this transformative phase of life.

My take away: My happiness counts. A responsibility undertaken will be delivered best when I feel at my best about it.

So choose. Choose for yourself. Choose your style. Take ownership. Be your unique self. And rest will be taken care of!
